I completed my Master of Science (Clinical Neuropsychology) in 1984 and have worked as a Clinical Neuropsychologist for nearly 30 years. My thesis was on the neuropsychological effects of polysubstance abuse and I have maintained a very strong interest and links in this area.
I am a Registered Psychologist through the AHPRA, I have Endorsement as a Clinical Neuropsychologist and I am a Registered Supervisor.
I have worked in acute hospital (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney), acute rehabilitation (Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre Melbourne) and community settings (arbias) and my interests and areas of expertise include alcohol and substance related brain injury, traumatic brain injury, the recovery of function following brain injury, behaviour management, the ecological validity of neuropsychological tests and brain injury in the prison system. I currently conduct a medico-legal practice (primarily forensic), provide consultation to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and provide peer supervision to Clinical Neurosychologists, as well as supervision for Psychologists undertaking their Registrar training in Clinical Neuropsychology.
In my medico-legal role (for over 15 years), I have completed assessments following referrals from road authorities (e.g. TAC), insurance companies, legal practitioners (both private and Victoria Legal Aid) and private organisations (companies). In terms of insurance and private company assessments (Workcover, Total and Permanent Disability, Fitness to Work etc), I have an in-depth knowledge regarding relevant assessment procedures and I am trained in Whole Person Impairment Assessments under the APA 4th and 5th Editions. I am also have in-depth knowledge regarding legal procedures and common referral questions (e.g., assessments for fitness to plead, mental impairment, fitness to give evidence (complainants), sentencing considerations etc).
I have an active interest in research with over 20 peer reviewed publications and over 70 conference presentations or invited papers. My research activities focus on issues relating to alcohol related brain injury, substance related brain injury and rehabilitation following acquired brain injury. My research project titled “Acquired Brain Injury in the Victorian Prison System” won the International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) 2011 (Research) Award.
I am a member of several professional bodies (APS, CCN, ASSBI) and have been on several committees with my current positions being ARBIAS (Chairman of the Management Committee) and the Australian National Preventative Health Agency (ANPHA) Expert Committee on Alcohol.
I regularly conduct training workshops and am involved in the training of postgraduate professional psychologists, as well as the supervision of Clinical Neuropsychologists .
